Sodium Channels

Sodium channels are transmembrane ion channels that selectively conduct sodium ions across the cell membrane. They are present in excitable cells such as neurons and myocytes where they contribute to the influx of sodium cations, and the resulting rising phase of the action potential.

There are two main classes:

  • Ligand-gated Sodium Channels
  • Voltage-gated Sodium Channels

Sodium channel blockers are small molecules which block the flow of sodium ions through channels either from the extracellular or intracellular side of the channel. Sodium channel blockers are used to treat cardiac arrhythmia.
