Epithelial Sodium Channels (ENaCs)

Epithelial sodium channels (ENaCs), also known as amiloride-sensitive sodium channels (ASSC), are transmembrane ion channels that conduct sodium ions across the cell membrane.

ENaCs are likely heterotrimeric proteins, made up of three of four different subunits, α, β, γ and δ. As the sequence of subunits α and δ are very similar, functional channels are made up of either α, β, γ or β, γ, δ assemblies.

α, β, γ -ENaCs are located in the kidneys, sweat glands, lungs, and colon where they function to reabsorb sodium to help maintain salt and water homeostasis. ENaCs located in the kidneys and colon are regulated by aldosterone, which increases sodium reabsorption.

β, γ, δ -ENaCs are found in the pancreas, testes, ovaries and their function is still not known.
