What Causes Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer's stems from the damage of brain cells. When brain cells die, they don't regenerate. As time goes by, more neural pathways are destroyed, affecting all kinds of cognitive functions. Age-related changes to the brain can fuel brain cell damage. These include the production of free radicals, inflammation, and shrinking of some parts of the brain.

Other causes of brain cell damage are physical trauma, stroke, infections, neurological illnesses, and a shortage of oxygen supply to brain tissue.

There are two types of AD: early on-set and late-onset Alzheimer's. Early-onset is rare and affects people between the ages of 30 and mid-60s. The more common type is late-onset Alzheimer’s, whose symptoms manifest in people in their mid-60s and onwards. Gene mutations inherited from parents are to blame for early-onset Alzheimer’s. There’s a high risk of developing late-onset AD if there’s a presence of the apolipoprotein E gene on chromosome 19.

Generally, lifestyle, environment, and genetics can all be contributing factors to the development of AD.

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease

Common symptoms of AD are:

  • Memory loss where one forgets details such as dates, or information that they have just learned.
  • Behavioral changes such as constant irritability, aggression, restlessness, and changes in personality.
  • Problem coordinating speech and physical movements.

Different studies have shown a strong relationship between the formation of Tau fibrils and certain subtypes of Alzheimer’s. As such, studying the molecular structure of these fibrils holds the promise of understanding more about what triggers the disease, and as a result, how to fight it.

What are Fibrils?

Fibrils are structural materials present in most living organisms. That alone makes them a valuable research tool in microbiology, which in turn helps to understand diseases better and even possibly find a cure for diseases that affects the human nervous system. Sometimes, amyloid fibrils are formed by soluble proteins. This is an abnormal type of fibril which is insoluble and incapable of providing structural support to cells. This form of fibril has been associated with AD.

Besides their destructive behavior when it comes to diseases, amyloid fibrils have proven useful in bionanotechnology due to their strength and stability. Research is, therefore, necessary to understand more about how the combination of proteins and peptides can be useful, and how they can be used to combat amyloid ailments.
