What is cancer?

Although our scientific understanding of the hallmarks of cancer has come a long way in the past 60 years or so, it has also become clear that cancer, which is the general name for more than 100 diseases, is incredibly complicated. Although uncontrolled growth and invasion of other tissues are two of the fundamental characteristics of cancerous cells, researchers have identified many more hallmarks.

Cancer is fundamentally described as uncontrolled cell division and growth, and therefore disruptions in the normal process of the cell cycle are at the heart of most cancer research. There are many signaling pathways underlying both normal and diseased cellular processes, and researchers continue to investigate the cause and effects of disruptions to the cell cycle.
