Neuroscience is the study of nervous system across main disciplines. The nervous system has two main parts, the central nervous system (CNS) that includes the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral system (PNS), which consists of nerves that connect the CNS to the rest of the body.

The PNS controls voluntary movement, involuntary functions through the autonomic nervous system (consisting of both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems), and the gastrointestinal system through the enteric nervous system. The CNS sends and receives information from different areas of the body and the brain.

The nervous system is made up of neurons, a specialized cell type that receives and sends signals. Theses electrochemical signals are received onto the dendrites of a neuron, and then passed along down the axon of a neuron. When the electrochemical signal reaches the end of the axon, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters into the junction between the axon and the dendrite. This junction is called a synapse.

The neuronal network is supported by glial cells (glia). Glia are responsible for providing nutrition, homeostasis, and myelin sheaths to the neuronal population.

Neuroscientists are driving research forward in an attempt to better understand neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease in order to provide effective treatments or cures.
