Heart

The heart is a muscular, cone-shaped organ that pumps blood through the blood vessels. It is a critical component of the cardiovascular system which functions to maintain blood flow to all parts of the body.

An electrical system controls the heart and uses electrical signals to contract the heart’s walls. When the walls of the ventricles contract, blood is pumped into the circulatory system.

Heart disease refers to a range of diseases affecting the heart and blood vessels, including coronary artery disease (atherosclerosis), congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathy, ischemic heart disease, stroke, arrhythmias, and congenital heart defects.

Recent studies have begun to elucidate the function of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in the development of atherosclerosis. Toll-like receptors (TLRs), which are found on many cells including the surface of human endothelial cells, are part of the innate immune system. They are known for their ability to recognize and fight microbial disease, and for the fact that they initiate inflammatory responses. TLRs and their signaling components have been shown to contribute to inflammatory processes that are associated with heart disease risk.
